This (8) hour Baton Course is offered on a monthly bases.
7585.9. (a) The course of training in the carrying and usage of the baton, the satisfactory completion of which shall be required of applicants who wish to obtain a baton permit, shall be in the format prescribed by the Department of Consumer Affairs as delineated in the bureau's "Baton Training Manual." Training covered but not limited too:
(1) Moral and legal aspects of baton usage.
(2) Use of force.
(3) Baton familiarization and uses.
(4) First aid for baton injuries.
(5) Fundamentals of baton handling.
(A) Stances and grips.
(B) Target areas.
(C) Defensive techniques.
(D) Control techniques.
(E) Arrest and control techniques
Requiremts:
1. Be 18 years old
2. Have a current CA Guard Card
3. Complete 8 hours of baton training
4. BSIS State fees
Note: NEW LAW pertaining to baton permit as of January 1,2024
New requirements for baton permits:
• Applicants (after training completed) must submit a complete application along with $60 fee directly to the Bureau.
• All baton permits will be subject to expiration and renewal every two years.
• Applicants for an initial baton permit, and those renewing an existing baton permit, must complete a baton training course at a licensed Baton Training Facility.
• A baton permit will be able to be associated to a Private Patrol Operator licensee, including a sole proprietor, partner, or qualified manager.
• Active-Duty Peace Officers will be provided specified training exemptions.
The initial baton permit application
January 1, 2024. The fee (paid to BSIS) for the initial baton permit is sixty dollars ($60). Prior to applying for a baton permit, applicants must complete the required baton training course specified in Business and Professions Code (BPC) Section 7585.9. The baton permit application requires a licensed Baton Training Instructor to complete a certification page, included with the application, certifying completion of the training.
Renewal Application/Training Requirement
The renewal application will be available on the Bureau's website starting April 1, 2024.
The renewal fee (paid to BSIS) is forty dollars ($40). Permit holders need to complete the training specified in BPC Section 7585.9 within six months prior to the expiration date. The renewal application requires a licensed Baton Training Instructor to complete a certification page, included with the application, certifying completion of the training.
